One of the teenage girls injured in a tubing accident at Deer Valley Resort Monday night later died, a spokesperson for the University of Utah Hospital said.
Jessica Frankel was 16 years old and died at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the hospital spokesperson said.
The other girl, whose name is Janet Oliva and who is 17 years old, remained hospitalized in fair condition, the spokesperson said.
The hospital did not provide details about her injuries.
The two were vacationing in Park City from outside of Utah.
A spokesperson for the Laurel School, a private girls school in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, Ohio, where the teens were classmates, said the girl who died was a junior. The other girl is also a junior, the spokesperson said. The school is on winter break.
The accident was a rare sort of tragedy on the slopes. Deer Valley prohibits tubing, and it is uncommon for someone to pick a ski run as a place to go tubing. Other places like Gorgoza Park in the Snyderville Basin and Soldier Hollow in Wasatch County offer hills specially designed for tubing.
Emergency responders said the two teens were tubing on the Success ski run, which is a beginner-rated run frequently used by skiers heading to Snow Park Lodge.
The tube they were on went off the ski run and struck a tree, the Park City Fire District said. A 911 call was made at a little before 9 p.m. The Fire District said both of the teens were in critical condition when they were taken from the scene.
A Deer Valley representative said it is dangerous for someone to be on the slopes after regular skiing hours and that people usually are not found on ski runs once the lifts have shut down for the day.
The Laurel School released a statement saying the school is "heartbroken" about Frankel's death.
"She was a source of inspiration and light; a wonderful, kind, confident, resilient young woman with immense promise. Jessica was a gifted athlete, a strong student and a loyal, loving friend who touched many lives in our close-knit Laurel community," the statement said.
