While fire restrictions were lifted statewide Friday, Sept. 7 at midnight, the Summit County Councilmembers and County Manager Bob Jasper decided the risk was too high to lift the restrictions in Summit County.

"With the Wanship fire and the I-80 fire, the fire danger is still significant enough that the county has decided to keep their county-wide restrictions in place until Oct. 1," Summit County Fire Warden Bryce Boyer said.

The statewide fire restrictions were first put in place June 4, with Summit County's fire restrictions beginning began a week later.

"Any open fire is banned, whether it be a camp-fire or a controlled burn on private property," Summit County Sheriff Spokesman Ron Bridge said that when the restrictions lift a burn permit will still be need to light a fire on private property.
