Ski Utah is breaking out of the box with its most recent marketing campaign to get skiers and snowboarders ramped up for the winter season: a create-your-own meme challenge.
The challenge is to create a meme, an image expressing a concept or idea that is shared on social networking sites such as Facebook. Seen on feeds and timelines, memes often use pop culture references.
"Skiing like a religion," said Brandon Ott, the content editor for Ski Utah. "People want to stand out and show their colors. I also think skiers are very social media savvy and a meme is a quick visual way to do that, whether they do it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter."
In a recent blog post, Ski Utah invited people to get into the winter spirit for the chance to win two free lift tickets to the resort of their choosing by participating in the challenge.
"The movie trailers are dropping, the gear swap dates are set, and you get up excited, knowing fall is in the air and winter is closer and closer," the post read.
"It's a contagious virus, spreading one forum post or Facebook link at a time."
The meme challenge will continue through Saturday at midnight when all submissions are due. A winner will be selected Monday, Sept. 17.
