The Park City Board of Education has selected Tom Van Gorder to fill in as the Interim Superintendent of school district until a permanent replacement is hired sometime next year. Van Gorder will officially take the position on October 1 when current Superintendent Ray Timothy will leave to head up the Utah Education Network.
"As superintendent, I will need to make sure all the initiatives of school board and the administration are running smoothly," Van Gorder said on taking the postion. "There is a lot of dealing with the public, whether that is students, teachers, parents or administrators. And budget issues will be something I know I will have to keep an eye on."
"Budget issues are still front and foremost," he added. "That means making sure that cuts made for this school year are monitored and maintained so that we don't slip back into a position where the budget becomes a major issue."
The board voted unanimously to select Van Gorder, who served as the interim superintendent before Timothy was hired on in 2007.
"The board looked at the candidates who had the right skill set to take over on interim basis," said board president Mo Hickey. "Based on his previous experience, we made a unanimous choice that he was the right for the job."
"Tom has been immersed in the district for well over 20 years," Hickey continued. "He has worked with every administrator and board member firsthand, and we thought he'd be perfect."
Van Gorder has worked in several positions for Park City School District since 1994 including serving as interim superintendent in 2002 and again in 2007, according to a press release from the school district. He is currently the District's Director of Student Services.
"I'm honored that they would put me in this position of responsibility," Van Gorder said. "I take it very seriously and look forward to filling the role to the best of my abilities."
State law prohibits the Board of Education from hiring a permanent replacement for a superintendent between the time a new school board member is elected and when the member takes office in January, the press release stated. The board will readdress filling the position permanently this spring, starting a nationwide search following the elections.
