The Park Record

People’s Health Clinic needs volunteer translators

It started with a team of medical volunteers in a van in 1999. Now, the People’s Health Clinic has grown into a 5,000 square foot facility, staffed by both volunteers and professional staff to support the needs of the uninsured in Summit and Wasatch counties.

As many as 8,600 patients received care from the clinic last year, which the Clinic cites as a 25% increase in patient visits since 2010. With the rising patient visits, volunteer coordinator Patti Peters said the need for volunteers is also increasing.

"We want to be the community’s wellness family," Peters said. "We want to provide patients with not only free health care, but also the information they need to live and be healthy."

Peters indicated that over 60% of the Clinic’s patients are Spanish-speaking members of the community. Though the volunteer staff is over 100 strong, Peters said medical interpreters fluent in both English and Spanish are always in need.

As the mission states on their website, the People’s Health Clinic offers pediatric care, chronic disease treatment, prenatal care, vision care and general adult clinics to those who qualify. The Clinic asks that patients be uninsured and a resident of either Summit or Wasatch county. Once they confirm residency, the professional clinical staff of volunteer doctors, physicians and medical providers treat the patient with the highest standard of medical quality.

Donations and support from the local community keep the Clinic operating. Grants, community donations and donations from the patients themselves make up for the operating costs of the clinic. At each visit, the clinic suggests a $20 donation. It is completely voluntary, however. Peters assured that no patient would be denied care or given lesser treatment if they do not donate.

For those members of the community who need care or would like to help, look to the People’s Health Clinic to be your wellness family. Contact the Clinic at 435-333-1850 for care and Patti Peters at patti@phcpc.org for volunteer information.
