Hot on the heels of the Uinta Center for the Arts' production of "Cinderella" at the Kamas Theatre, director Pam Lockwood already has plans in place for two new events "Hogwarts Halloween" and an Acting Workshop that will cover stage and film.

The "Hogwarts Halloween" will feature a short performance and a tour through a variety of spook-alley like settings.

The workshop, which Lockwood taught while living in Los Angeles, will give actors tips and training to further their careers or hobbies.

"Hogwarts Halloween," Oct. 19 through Oct. 30

With the popularity of the J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" book series, many acting companies are presenting performances that are based on the youthful wizard and his friends, Lockwood said.

The Uinta Center for the Arts is doing something a little different.

"We're doing a parody of the books if you will," she said during an interview with The Park Record. "The audience will come into the Kamas Theater, which will be like entering a jack-o-lantern's mouth. The lobby will be a magic shop, with low lights and objects. They'll be led into the seats where we'll put on a little performance."

The cast includes 20 kids and some extras who portray an array of monsters and other creatures of the night.

"It is family friendly, but there are scary moments otherwise it wouldn't be fun," Lockwood said with a laugh. "Parents must make the distinction to allow or disallow their kids to come. If their children scare easily, they may not want to bring them to the production, because some of the things will scare some of the adults as well."

After the performance, which will also include some images projected on the theater's movie screen, the audience will be led out the back door into a graveyard to begin a haunted tour.

"We'll guide them through some other areas including an old wizard's home and into Diagon Alley, which is that wizardly backstreet of shops in the Harry Potter books," Lockwood said. "Through it all, we'll provide photo opportunities and post pictures online while people wait in the graveyard."

"Hogwarts Halloween" will run from Friday, Oct. 19, through Tuesday, Oct. 31. Admission is $7.

"The first tour starts at 6 o'clock at night and we will have three or four shows and tours a night," Lockwood said. "They'll run between 30 to 45 minutes each, and the amount of people who show up will dictate how fast the lines go. We expect it will be quite fun."

Acting for Film Workshop, Oct. 29

The acting workshop, which will also be held at the Uinta Center for the Arts is an all-day session that will begin at 10 a.m. and run through 5 p.m., Lockwood said.

"We cover the craft of acting including how to stand and take direction to lighting, preparing a resume to working with agents and managers," she said. "We will also focus on the premise that acting is the art of becoming or being someone. We will work with various methods about how to do that."

Lockwood, who will teach the session, will show actors that their bodies are their instruments, much like an artist uses brushes and canvases.

"We will also talk about little things that include the importance of being reliable and on time," she said. "Making a film can cost $10,000 a minute, and while video is cheaper, you still have the crews behind the camera. So, it's really imperative people learn to be on time and that they learn acting so directors and film companies can just go ahead and work."

Lockwood first taught this class while living in Los Angeles, during the 1980s. When she moved to Utah a few years ago, she was amazed at the thriving acting community.

"There is a ton of talent in Utah and I marvel at how much talent there is in this state for the amount of people who live here," she said. "The problem is a lot of them don't bother to learn the craft, because they think all they have to do is stand up and be cute. There is a real craft to acting and if they can get it, they will find work all the time."
