The group that represents business interests in the Main Street district has sent a flier to people who live inside the Park City limits urging them to vote in favor of a City Hall ballot measure dealing with sales taxes.

The Historic Park City Alliance, consisting of businesses on or close to Main Street, on Monday sent approximately 4,000 fliers to Park City postal addresses. They started arriving on Tuesday.

"Our sense of community unites us and makes Park City special. Please join us in this important effort to foster our community's assets while protecting our natural beauty," the flier reads.

It suggests people vote 'Yes' on the ballot measure since the community values "Historic Old Town, the heart of Park City."

The flier explains the ballot measure, mentions what it will cost someone making a purchase in Park City and says what sort of improvements could be funded with the extra money.

Alison Butz, the executive director of the alliance, said the group spent approximately $1,700 to design, print and mail the flier. No taxpayer money provided to the alliance was used for the mailer, she said.

"We wanted to be able to make sure this measure on the ballot isn't forgotten," Butz said, alluding to the higher-profile decisions that voters will make on Election Day.

The ballot measure asks Parkites to slightly increase a tax known as the resort communities sales and use tax. It would be increased from 1.1 percent to 1.6 percent if approved by voters -- another 50 cents in sales taxes on a $100 purchase.

The base sales tax would increase from 7.45 percent to 7.95 percent. The overall sales tax someone pays depends on the type of purchase they make.

City Hall estimates the increase would generate another $3.2 million in the first 12 months it is in place. The extra money would be put into improvements along Main Street, conservation purchases and infrastructure upgrades in Old Town.
