Live PC Give PC covers education nonprofits

Gina Barker, The Park Record

Education-based nonprofits are hard at work promoting their own Live PC Give PC initiatives, raising funds for students from preschool to high school. More than 50 nonprofits with an educational mission statement joined the day of giving this year.

Live PC Give PC, a one-day online fundraiser for Park City and Summit County nonprofits, is scheduled for Nov. 16 and will last 24 hours. The event helps raise money for nonprofits ranging from maintaining hiking trails to hosting cultural events to providing supplies to those in need. Last year, the single-day event raised $330,000 for 55 nonprofits, with funds coming from 1,500 donors.

The Park City Foundation set a new goal to raise $500,000 this year, with hopes of getting new donor participants. And the nonprofits are hoping to help that initiative. The Park City Day School, a private school in Summit County, has challenged students to help raise funds for the school by enlisting every student to find five unique donors. If every class is able to find new donors, the classes will be rewarded with a free dress day.

"We are trying to encourage more participation," said Tess Miner-Farra, the Park City Day School Associate Head. "That is why we created the class challenge system Each class earns a free dress day on whatever day they choose if they can do it, and that could be a Crazy Hair Day or Rock Star Day, something they can earn that as reward for helping the school."

The Weilenmann School of Discovery, a public charter school, listed specific ways the funding would be used, including hiring for a Master Teachers position which would "enact inquiry-based instruction that exceeds core standards," according to the Live PC Give PC website. The funds would also be used to integrate technology, media, science, visual and performing arts into the core curriculum, utilize nature to enhance the classroom experiences and assess student performance.

The self-described as a "not-for-profit school administered by the parents" of students, the Park City Cooperative Preschool, is also looking for donations to improve programs and supplies at the school. The school, which uses a learning-as-play model, works on student self-esteem, social skills, classroom preparation and parent involvement.

The Park City Education Foundation is putting a strategy in place this year for Live PC Give PC, getting individual schools in on the day of giving. Every school in the Park City School District is participating, posting a project on the PCEF page where prospective donors can give to individual schools. Whether it is an elementary school or the high school, donors can peruse the different projects seeking funding.

"This event helps raise awareness among our families that we benefit so much from the rich nonprofit community in Park City," Miner said. " Nonprofits add to the quality of life in this town. If you live here, support what we do here."
