It's your choice: a Toyota Prius or a Ford F-150 pickup truck.
UHaulCarShare, a firm under the U-Haul umbrella, has launched the first-ever car-sharing service in Park City. The firm inked a deal with City Hall allowing it to park two vehicles in a covered floor of the China Bridge garage.
They arrived in early December and are parked between the NG and the N1 levels on the north end of the garage. They are emblazoned with the UHaulCarShare logo.
The spots where they are parked have been signed 'No parking' and reserved for vehicles in the car-sharing service. Vehicles parked in the spots that are not part of the program may be towed.
The car-sharing service requires people to enroll as members. They pay a registration fee and then for the use of the vehicles. The registration fee is $15 for people who sign up by March 1. It increases to $25 afterward. The people who register by the early deadline also receive $25 worth of driving credits. A keypad allows entry to the vehicles by people who are enrolled.
The number of people who had registered by Monday was not available. If the service becomes popular, more vehicles could be put into the car-sharing pool.
Park City leaders support the car-sharing service as something that offers people access to a vehicle without needing to own one. They also say it is an environmentally friendly service.
Tyler Poulson, the environmental sustainability manager at City Hall, said the municipal government plans to register with the car-sharing service.
In a release distributed by City Hall, the service is described as something that "removes the burden of car maintenance, insurance, and even gas!" The vehicles are available for rentals at any time and for time periods of between one hour and three days. The fees people are charged include fuel, insurance and the maintenance of the vehicle, the release says, noting that roadside assistance at any time is also included.
City Hall says its research has shown people who participate in similar services elsewhere own fewer vehicles, use public transportation more than others and drive fewer miles in their own vehicles. The release claims that a vehicle in the service could "replace up to 20 personally owned vehicles."
Information about the service is available online, www.uhaulcarshare.com. Select the link to Park City, Utah. The site offers a map pointing to the China Bridge location of the vehicles. It indicates when the vehicles are available and the cost. The website says the vehicles cost $4.95 per hour to rent plus 79 cents per mile for the pickup truck and 49 cents each mile for Prius. It allows someone to select a time to pick a vehicle up and a time when it will be dropped off.
