According to the charging documents of cases highlighted by County Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Bates, Shea Renee Sheeran, 21, of Kamas, pled guilty on Monday, Jan. 16 to second-degree felony child endangerment after she used illegal drugs during her pregnancy. She was sentenced to one to 15 years in the Utah State Prison.

Sheeran gave birth on Aug. 29 to a baby boy who tested positive for amphetamines and opiates. She tested positive for cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamines and opiates.

After experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms, the baby was transferred by helicopter from the Park City Medical Center to the Intermountain Medical Center for emergency treatment. After his release, he was placed in an adoptive home.

According to the charging documents, his physicians say he may suffer long-term complications, such as brain damage and learning disabilities.

Sheeran admitted she had kept her pregnancy a secret from her physician who prescribed her Adderall and Clonazepam. Sheeran also said she had used cocaine and heroin early in her pregnancy.

At the time of the offense, Sheeran was on parole from the Utah State Prison due to previous convictions of forgery and possession or use of a controlled substance.

  • Shawnae Grover, 21, was charged on Jan. 8 with two counts of third-degree felony assault by a prisoner and class B misdemeanor interference with an arresting officer.

    Grover was an inmate in the Summit County Jail on Dec. 15, when she got into an argument with another inmate, according to charging documents. Jail staff asked the other inmate to leave the area when they saw the argument escalating.

    When Grover saw the inmate leaving, she ran toward her and was intercepted by a deputy, who she punched twice. Three deputies restrained her on the ground and handcuffed her as she continued to thrash forcibly.

    Grover's initial court appearance is scheduled Jan. 28

  • Joseph Anwar Hawel, 25, from Desplaines, Ill., was charged on Jan. 11 with third-degree felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and class C misdemeanor failure to signal.

    Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Tom Simpson observed Hawel's Jeep Commander pass a semi truck on the left side and did not signal until he was already changing lanes. Simpson pulled the jeep over for failing to signal for two seconds prior to changing lanes.

    When he approached the vehicle, Simpson smelled raw marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

    A consent search of the jeep revealed 47 vacuum-sealed bags containing 46 pounds of raw marijuana, which were located in two duffle bags and a green suitcase.

    Hawel's roll call court appearance is scheduled Jan. 28.
