Roadwork forecast: Deer Valley Drive this year

Jay Hamburger THE PARK RECORD

A well-traveled section of Deer Valley Drive is scheduled to be redone this year and Park City officials next week will outline the work during an open house that will likely introduce the project to many of the people there.

The work has not been widely publicized. The project, though, is expected to impact traffic along the major entryway to lower Deer Valley.

The section of Deer Valley Drive between the Old Town roundabout and the intersection with Deer Valley Drive North will be under construction as part of the project. The intersection is known by many as the location of the building that once housed the Stew Pot restaurant.

Matt Cassel, the Park City engineer, said the project will include resurfacing the road and infrastructure upgrades. He said storm drains, a water line and sections of a natural-gas line will be replaced.

The workers, meanwhile, will also build road and pedestrian-friendly improvements. They include six or seven bus pullouts, adding a left-turn lane at the intersection with Deer Valley Drive North, replacing the sidewalk and installing lights along the sidewalk. Two digital signs will be installed that display the speed of passing vehicles.

The project is anticipated to cost between $3 million and $4 million. Cassel said $1 million in federal grants have been secured and the rest of the funding will come from City Hall.

Cassel said the work is anticipated to start by the end of April and be completed by mid-October. He said work will be halted during major events like the 4th of July celebrations, the Park City Kimball Arts Festival, the Tour of Utah bicycle race and Labor Day weekend. He said the work will be coordinated with Deer Valley Resort on days when events are scheduled at the resort to avoid traffic problems.

Cassel said there is a possibility the road will be closed at some points during the work. He did not have details. Cassel said any closures would be planned to occur in the spring or the fall, when traffic usually dips. There are numerous residences along the section of Deer Valley Drive that will be redone, and the road serves as the access point for many others.

The open house is scheduled on Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. in the Park City Council chambers at the Marsac Building. Cassel will appear alongside representatives from the design team and the road crew.
