The owner of a small Main Street hotel died Monday night after apparently falling through a ceiling, the woman's family said.
Carol Rixey was 86 years old and owned the Star Hotel since 1975.
In an online statement, the police indicated receiving a report of a person on the ground in a hallway on an upstairs floor at 11:19 p.m. Tenants saw the person on the ground, the police said. Police officers and an ambulance responded to the Star Hotel and determined the person had died.
The online statement indicated the person apparently fell through the sheetrock of the ceiling. The person fell from an attic to the second floor, close to a staircase, the police said in the statement.
Family members told The Park Record it was Rixey who fell. The family said it appeared she was putting in a fan when she fell.
The investigation is continuing, the police said.
