Three suspects who had led authorities on a chase following a vehicle burglary at Kimball Junction on Wednesday were taken into custody. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office employed the help of other agencies in locating two of the suspects who had fled on foot.

The suspects are Jennifer Ramirez, 31, Sharli Hoopiiaina, 26, and Timothy Arnold, 29, according to a Summit County Sheriff’s Office release.

At about 5 a.m., Summit County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a call of active vehicle burglaries occurring in the parking lot of Walmart at Kimball Junction, according to Summit County Sheriff’s Capt. Justin Martinez. Three suspects – two females and one male – had reportedly stolen a U-Haul cargo van.

Deputies responded and located the van near the Powderwood Condominiums and attempted to stop the suspects, who took off and led deputies on a chase down Kilby Road and onto Interstate 80 westbound. Near mile post 141, the suspects’ van’s tires were spiked and the vehicle veered off the Interstate and through a fence before coming to rest near Rasmussen Road and Hidden Cove Road, the release said.

The suspects then abandoned the van and deputies immediately took Hoopiiaina into custody while Ramirez and Arnold fled on foot. Deputies set up containment and utilized K-9 units to track the remaining two suspects, Martinez said.

A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was also employed to search for the two suspects and Ramirez was located shortly afterwards. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office was also assisted by the Utah Highway Patrol, the Park City Police Department and enforcement officers with the Utah Department of Natural Resources. Ramirez was found one mile from the abandoned van.

Arnold, who was still at large into Wednesday afternoon, had approached a citizen who had been stopped for an unrelated accident on I-80 and asked if he could use the individual’s cell phone. That individual then contacted Summit County Dispatch, stating that a suspicious male had been walking on the freeway, according to the release.

Deputies then converged on the area and Arnold ran into thick brush on the south side of I-80 eastbound, attempting to flee on foot. Tank, a Summit County Sheriff’s Office bloodhound, tracked Arnold and helped deputies bring him into custody between Lambs Canyon and East Canyon on I-80 eastbound.

All three suspects were booked into the Summit County Jail on charges related to vehicle burglary, felony evading and outstanding warrants, according to the release.
