Fourth of July activities in Park City are plentiful.

From the morning’s 5K Fun Run to the parade to rugby in City Park, the day is packed with events for spectators and participants alike.

Volleyball is also a staple of Park City’s holiday celebrations, as the July 4 Doubles Volleyball Tournament returns for the 34th year.

More than 100 teams are expected to participate in a variety of competition levels. The tournament offers open classes for the best men’s and women’s pairs, but also has junior, men’s and women’s novice, B, A and AA classes so players of all skill levels can participate.

Jessica Moran, Park City Recreation’s recreation and marketing supervisor, said the tournament is so popular because it offers players a chance to experience Park City’s atmosphere.

"The reason people really love it is it gives them a chance to come up to Park City and have that experience in the summer," she said. "Park City is a destination and that attracts people to come up here. It’s a lot cooler here than Salt Lake and we get a lot of players coming from Provo, Ogden and all around the Intermountain West area."

The men’s and women’s open divisions, featuring some of the best players in the state, will have games on the sand courts at City Park. All other games will be held at Treasure Mountain Junior High. Moran said the open divisions are definitely worth checking out for those who find themselves in City Park after the parade.

"These guys are good," she said. "A lot of them are former college players, so the competition level is pretty high."

There is a cash prize for the open divisions, but Moran said all the top teams at every division will receive some sort of prize.

"The open division is done on a cash basis," she said. "The prizes are based on the number of teams. [For the other divisions], we have so many fantastic local sponsors. We give prizes to first, second and third place in every division. We get gift certificates to restaurants, the outlets and that kind of stuff. That’s always a big draw."

Moran said all players will be treated to a great tournament atmosphere with top referees and well-organized schedules.

"They’re Utah Outdoor Volleyball Association (UOVA) sanctioned tournaments, so they’re run well," she said. "They’re professionally done tournaments. They run tournaments all over the state. It’s a great group to get involved with."

Though the tournament draws players from all over the state and from places like Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming, Moran said local players will have plenty of fun, too.

"We’d love to see more participation from locals," she said. "You don’t have to be a super volleyball player to enter. Anybody can come out and play."

The tournament begins at 9 a.m. on July 4. Team check-in runs from 8 to 8:30 a.m.

Registration is currently open online at http://www.active.com and closes at noon on July 1. There is no day-of registration available. The cost is $15 for UOVA members and $25 for non-UOVA members.
