Salt Lake County is hosting a public open house to gather input on its proposed General Plans for Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and Parley's Canyon.

Those plans could have a critical impact on the Wasatch Back and Parkites ought to pay close attention.

While details are scarce, at least publically, there are a lot of ideas swirling around the peaks on our side of the mountain, too.

Deer Valley Resort recently announced plans to expand its boundaries toward Wasatch County while Canyons Resort has its eyes on a connection with Solitude. And while Park City Mountain Resort has been quiet on the issue of late, in the past there have been tentative discussions about connecting with other resorts on both sides of the Wasatch divide.

Last year when the controversial SkiLink lift between Solitude and Canyons was proposed, Salt Lake County planners and others alluded to nearly a dozen alternative connections that could knit the Wasatch Front and Back resorts together, in their view, more effectively.

But, apparently, those discussions stalled and in the meantime there has been a major change at Canyons. The behemoth of ski area companies, Vail Resorts, took over day to day operations of Canyons in May, in a deal that could also include, pending the outcome of an ongoing lawsuit, management Park City Mountain Resort.

Everything seems to be in flux at the same time and this could be viewed as a problem, or as an opportunity.

We prefer the latter, especially if Summit County launches a similar effort to take a long, inclusive overview of the panoply of plans and pipe dreams for future development of our ski areas and all of the land both public and private -- among them.

Salt Lake County's open house is scheduled to take place Weds, July 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Salt Lake County Government Center, 2001 South State Street. For more information about some of the issues under consideration go to: http://wasatchcanyons.slco.org/

And we'll let you know when the players on the Wasatch Back are ready to share their plans as well.
