Barley’s Angels will host second annual beer and chocolate pairings

Nearly two years ago, Alexandra Ortiz de Fargher, co-owner of Shades of Pale Brewing, founded the Utah chapter of Barley’s Angels.
Barley’s Angels is an organization that features more than 70 international chapters that introduce women to craft beers.
It’s also an off shoot of an organization called Pink Boots Society, an organization for women who are professionals in the beer industry, founded by Teri Fahrendorf.
While Pink Boots Society is all about helping professionals, Barley’s Angels mission is to host educational socials, beer pairings and brewery tours for women at large," Ortiz de Fargher explained during an interview with The Park Record.
"I started Barley’s Angels in Utah in 2012 and we started off with a tour of Shades of Pale and a beer pairing at Good Karma restaurant," she said. "From that, a group of women wanted to help more by planning events. So we now have an informing planning committee."
The committee has organized its second event, the second "Beer and Chocolate Extravaganza," which will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Boneyard Saloon and Kitchen, 1251 Kearns Blvd.
"It’s going to be a beer and chocolate pairing," Ortiz de Fargher said. "There is something about beer, chocolate and women that makes for an incredible activity.
"We had a similar event last year at the Beer Hive, and it was such a huge success that we had to stop ticket sales," she said. "This year, we’re hosting it at the Boneyard, which is right across the street from Shades of Pale Brewery."
The location is perfect, because the brewery will offer a series of tours during the pairing. Small groups can sign up for a tour and meet the brewer, who happens to be Ortiz de Fargher’s husband, Trent Fargher.
For Thursday’s event, Millcreek Cacao will provide seven different chocolates, and there will be an array of beers from Uinta and Shades of Pale, one of which is a new Shades of Pale brew that was crafted a few weeks ago.
"We will pair our beers and some beers from Uinta Brewing with chocolates made by Millcreek Cacao Roasters, which is based in Salt Lake City," Ortiz de Fargher explained.
Millcreek Cacao Roasters, whose owners Dana Brewster and Mark DelVecchio live in Park City, creates its chocolates from cacao beans that are obtained through a partnership with Ecuadorian farmers."
"It’s all about the palate and the blending of melding of flavors," she said "We try to find flavors that are complimentary with each other and make your mouth water. It’s something that people just have to experience."
The pairing and tour is a private event and open only to women, she said.
"Women who wish to attend should email me," Ortiz de Fargher said. "We will pair them up with one of our members so they can come as a guest."
Barley’s Angels will host its Beer and Chocolate event at the Boneyard Saloon and Kitchen, 1251 Kearns Blvd., on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. The event is open to ladies only and RSVPs are required.
