Park City Library’s annual used book sale will be at the Park City Senior Center
August 22, 2014
Earlier this year, the Friends of the Park City Library, a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to helping the library, didn’t know if its annual used book sale would happen.
Because the Library and Education Center is going through a renovation, the Jim Santy Auditorium — where the sale is usually held — is accessible, said Marlene Peacock, co-president with the Friends of the Park City Library,
"We were in limbo for awhile," Peacock said during an interview with The Park Record. "The library has been moved into the much smaller Miners Hospital temporarily and it became a kind of a logistical nightmare, because we have more than 5,000 books to sell."
Luckily, the community stepped forward and the administration of the Park City Senior Center, 1361 Woodside Ave., offered its space for the sale.
The sale will take place Saturday, Aug. 30, through Monday, Sept. 1.
"Thinking about moving those books and where we were going to hold the sale was worrisome," Peacock said. "We also didn’t know how we would be able to pay for what we needed to hold the book sale, because we have a limited budget, as well. So I can’t say enough at how thrilled we are about the Park City Senior Center allowing us to hold the book sale there for no charge."
The books, which have been donated by community members over the past year, are locked up in storage pods that have been provided by the city.
"We are, of course, downsizing from the Jim Santy Auditorium. So we’re going to get creative with how we present the books," Peacock said. "The books will be set up inside the Senior Center, and, weather dependent, we will have books set up outside the center on the ramp and on the lawn. The staff at the Senior Center has been absolutely wonderful and gracious."
The nice thing about the Senior Center is how close it is to the storage units.
"It’s just behind the education center and the pods are in the parking lot," she said. "So, the city trucks and city workers who move the books will just have to go around the corner."
Usually, the annual sale runs from Friday through Sunday, but since the senior center has other activities on Friday, the sale will start on Saturday, according to Peacock.
Friends of the Park City Library members will be able to preview the books on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Then the sale will open to the pubic from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The public will also be able to shop Sunday and Monday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Attendance to the sale is free, and books will be priced individually.
However, since the venue changed the Friends of the Park City Library thought they would try something new.
"Any sized bag people bring on Saturday or Sunday will cost only $10 to fill," Peacock said. "People can bring their own bags or buy some of the Friends of the Park City Library bags for $10 and fill them up."
Those who bring bags on Monday will be able to fill them for is $5 each, and there will be no limit to how many bags they can bring.
"Obviously, we don’t want people to bring in a huge Samsonite-luggage-sized bag," Peacock said with a laugh. "We ask the people who come to please, be reasonable."
In addition to the books, the sale will also include CDs and DVDs.
"This is a fun way for people to restock on their books and media for not a lot of money," Peacock said.
Usually the sale, which is the Friends of the Park City Library’s biggest fundraiser of the year, pulls in a little more than $6,000.
"The library depends on the extra funds," Peacock said. "The Friends is here to help the library with anything the city can’t support."
Once a month, the library staff submits a list of needs to Peacock and her board.
"We’ll evaluate the items and try to do what we can to give the library what it needs," she said. "We have a great relationship with the library and its staff."
Peacock will be grateful when the renovation is finished and is excited to see the result.
"We are grateful that the library and the architect kept us in the loop," she said. "So we’re happy for the community and know that the remodeled building will be a showcase for the library."
The Friends of the Park City Library will host its annual used book sale fundraiser at the Park City Senior Center, 1361 Woodside Ave., from Saturday, Aug. 30, through Monday, Sept. 1.
