Auto pedestrian accident on S.R. 224 results in fatality

UPDATE: A woman who was struck by two cars while trying to cross State Road 224 on Saturday, died Sunday afternoon at a Salt Lake hospital. Gabriela Caballero Lopez died of head injuries at 1 p.m. Sunday accroding to a representative of the Utah Highway Patrol. The 25-year-old woman from Paraguay died after being struck twice by cars while crossing State Road 224 at the Canyons resort intersection Saturday night, according to Utah Highway Patrol Corporal Todd Johnson.

The pedestrian was crossing west to east across S.R. 224 at 5:45p.m. She was close to, but not in the crosswalk, according to Johnson. She did not have a walk signal and was wearing dark clothing. Johnson said the woman was struck by car driving southbound that threw the woman into the other lane where she was struck by a northbound car.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol incident report, the area was dimly lit. There are bus stops on both sides of the road where the woman was crossing.

"We have no yet released the woman’s name because we have not been able to make contact with her family," Johnson said, adding that he expects more information to become available Monday afternoon.

The woman was taken to a Salt Lake City hospital. Johnson said she suffered severe head trauma in the accident.

The accident is still under investigation, but according to Johnson, no driver has been issued a citation.
