Boys’ basketball season previews

PARK CITY MINERS

Park City High School played its first game on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at East High School. Results were not available at press time. The Miners’ first home game will be against Grantsville on Dec. 9.

– Head coach: Caleb Fine – Assistant coaches: Kevin Ruda, Joe Nicholls, Bart Carlson, Ed Potts, Steve Cuttitta, Ben Kaufman – 2008-2009 record: 2-18 – 2008-2009 region finish: 6th place (0-10) – 2008-2009 state finish: Did not play – Key returning players: Brian Schettler, Jon Schettler, Sam Sisk, Sam Miller, Matt Christensen and Britton Buford. – Keys to success this season: "Playing up-tempo disciplined basketball (and) defending with a passion and having fun," coach Caleb Fine said. – Biggest challenges this season: "Believing that Park City basketball can and will be a winning program," Fine said. – The team to beat: Wasatch

SOUTH SUMMIT WILDCATS

The Wildcats’ first game will be at Union on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Their first home game will be against American Leadership Academy on Dec. 10.

The boy’s basketball team competed at home against Liahona on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Results were not available at press time. The Braves will face Ben Lomond at a home game on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.

– Assistant coaches: Devin Smith, Jerry Pace

– 2008-2009 record: 20-4

– 2008-2009 region finish: tied for first

– 2008-2009 state finish: 1st place

– Key returning players: Seniors Cameron Bowen, Brady Vernon, Dalan Judd and Colten Tholen

– Keys to success this season: "Good shot selection, minimize turnovers, improve our free-throw shooting percentage," coach Jerre Holmes said.

– Biggest challenges this season: Key player, point guard Devin Ovard, is recovering from a football injury

– The teams to beat: Layton Christian and South Summit
