Canyons draws All-Stars

The Park City Chamber Bureau considers the city to be both a perfect place to hold conventions and to for high-altitude training for serious athletes. And apparently Major League Soccer (MLS) agrees.

MLS has selected The Canyons Resort as the headquarter hotel for events surrounding the All-Star Game at Rio Tinto Stadium on July 29.

"Initially, they were just going to pick a hotel down in Sandy, and then we thought that they would at least be interested in coming up to Park City to host some of the meetings," Bob Kollar, Park City Chamber Bureau director of special events, said.

All-Star teams will train and practice at Quinn’s Junction starting Monday, July 27 for Wednesday evening’s 2009 MLS All-Star game. The Park City Sports Complex will also serve as the location for a commercial shoot for Volkswagen, one of the event sponsors. The shoot will take place on Sunday and Monday before the All-Star game and will feature about 12 MLS players. MLS will be utilizing the conference center at The Canyons Resort for additional meetings.

"Park City is a world-class destination resort with fantastic meeting spaces, wonderful dining options, plenty of outdoor activities for guests, and all conveniently located in a beautiful mountain setting only 35 minutes from an international airport," said Sean Dennison, a Major League Soccer spokesperson. "In addition, the high-altitude training facilities available for MLS and Everton FC athletes are as good as those found in any major metropolitan area."

The 2009 MLS All-Star Jam will also be held at The Canyons on July 28, the evening before the All-Star game, and will feature live music from Soul Live from 7-10 p.m. Following the concert, MLS will be hosting a fundraising event at Harry O’s with a deejay from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Proceeds will benefit MLS W.O.R.K.S., the charity division of the organization, and Nothing But Nets, a UN organization dedicated to eradicating Malaria around the world.
