Canyons to build new garage

County council approves construction project to begin this spring

Canyons Resort is going underground with one of its new guest offerings: three-levels of parking space.

The Summit County Council approved the project at its March 16 meeting at the Sheldon Richins Building.

The underground garage will be located in the Forum area between the Sundial Lodge, Grand Summit Hotel and Westgate Hotel. It will have between 350 and 400 stalls to accommodate guests to the resort.

A roundabout will likely be created to help mitigate traffic, the application said.

Work will begin as soon as the season ends this April.

The resort promised the county it would take actions to mitigate dust and construction traffic. Work is expected to take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday until it is complete.

Mike Goar, resort managing director, said the garage is part of a spate of projects continuing this year including the golf course, trail work and an expansion of snow-making capacity.

The garage should be completed by the summer of 2013 or earlier, Goar said.
