The Recorder's Office will be rolling out subscription-based access to certain online data within the next couple weeks.

"It won't be a subscription to all the records in the county, but it will be to a few of them," Summit County Recorder Alan Spriggs said. "All the information you are used to receiving through the Surveyor's Office, Treasurer's Office, the Assessor's Office and a lot information from the Recorder's Office is still available to the public without charge."

However, those who want to search further back in the records, such as 60 or 70 years ago, will need to subscribe.

"That will mainly affect title companies," he said. "Many title companies operate outside the county and Utah. We've got people retrieving data from as far away as India and Hong Kong. For those folks that need to go into the data deeply, we're hoping to pick up a subscription from them so that the county citizens don't have to subsidize it."

However, the subscription fee shouldn't be a burden, Spriggs added.

"You pay $5 for a whole day of searching to get everything we have available," he said. "And of course, if you're in Salt Lake City, you can't drive to Summit County for $5 anymore. It's a way to pass on some of the cost of maintaining the system."

To come up with a subscription fee structure, Spriggs examined all the Recorder's Office subscription fees in Utah, and accessed counties outside of Utah.

"Through all the research, I came up with a fee that is very minimal," he said.

The fees will help the Recorder's Office offset the cost of hardware, personnel and IT work to maintain the system, Spriggs said.

More than 900,000 documents are available online, totaling about 4 million pages of data.

"We have to have suitable equipment to do that," he said. "And there are various levels of access depending on what your needs are, so we're pretty flexible."

Those looking for meeting minutes, property and tax information, codes, GIS mapping data and historical documents will still be able to access the information free, both online and in person.

Spriggs said the Recorder's Office is making it possible for people and businesses to access the information from their own offices rather than having to drive to Summit County to physically search in the office.

"Now that doesn't prohibit anyone from coming in and looking through everything available to them without any cost, if they wish to do that," he said.

In conjunction with the transition to subscription-based online access, the Recorder's Office webpage itself will be revamped to include more information about recording procedures, what records do and don't do and what information you can find in a Recorder's Office.

"I think we're going to have a really good product," he said.
