According to Park City Fire Chief Paul Hewitt who is assisting at the scene of a fast-moving brush fire near Rockport Estates, 10-15 structures have been damaged and evacuations are in progress. Residents in Rockport Estates and in Sunrise Loop which is in the northeast area of Promomntory are being evacuated.
Hewitt said 21 personell are on scene and air support has been called in. He estimated that, about 300 acres were involved and as of 4:30 p.m., the fire was still growing.
"The smoke is so thick it is hard to see what those structures were, whether they were sheds or homes," he said.
UPDATE: 3 p.m.
A fast-burning brush fire is in progress near Rockport Estates just off of State Road 32 outside of Wanship. North Summit Fire Chief Kent Smith says there is no acreage estimate for the fire at this point but he added that Rockport Estates has been given an evacuation notice.
Smith said that roughly 100-125 structures are threatened by this fire and it is being handled collaboratively by the Park City Fire District, Summit County Fire, North Summit Fire as well as Utah state fire crews. Additional support was requested for state and federal fire crews, and Smith says as of 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday there is no word yet on assistance from those crews.
Road closures should be expected on S.R. 32 near the Rockport Dam and residents are urged to tell anyone who they know in the area to evacuate immediately. For more information on this fire, visit summitwildfires.com.
