Park City Rotary Club named both its Volunteer and Professional Citizens of the Year at a luncheon on Tuesday. Maurice Hickey and Sister Mary Ann Pajakowski were the recipients honored at Grub Steak Restaurant.

The first Citizen of the Year ceremony was held in 1981, and since then, the Park City Rotary Club has named honorees that exemplify the motto "service over self."

Abby McNulty of the Park City Education Foundation and Summit County Councilor Kim Carson both said kind words about Hickey who was the recipient of the Volunteer Citizen of the Year award.

"He is incredibly devoted to making this world a better place and making this community a better place," said McNulty. "He is unbelievably hard-working, and I cannot say that enough."

Hickey began his volunteer service about eight years ago with the "Men of McPolin," an attempt to get fathers more involved in schools. He is now a member of the Park City School District Board of Education, on which he will serve as President for the 2013-14 school year.

"We have a great school district and great people working in the district," said Hickey. "I just truly appreciate this."

Sister Mary Ann Pajakowski , Education Director of Holy Cross at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church was named Professional Citizen of the Year for her work with the Latino and immigrant community of Park City.

Several Rotary Club members and Sister Suzanne Brennan spoke about Pajakowski's dedication to the minority community and the impact of her work.

"We see her joy of being alive and bringing people together, and we are grateful for her open mind and open heart," said Brennan. "She sees that somebody has a need and also sees that somebody has a resource."

Pajakowski, a third-generation immigrant from Poland, spoke about her personal connection to the immigrant community and her appreciation of the support from the city.

"In terms of being a citizen, I think it's possible to give back," said Pajakowski. "It's possible to do more than just deliver services but to value the people involved in the services."

The Rotary Club will celebrate Park City's mining heritage with its annual parade on Historic Main Street on Monday, Sept. 2, and Hickey and Pajakowski will serve as Co-Grand Marshals.
