Council race down to five candidates

Kristina Eastham, Record contributing writer

Jack Martin Thomas withdrew his candidacy for this fall’s City Council race on Monday morning, according to Cindy LoPiccolo, the City Hall election official.

Thomas was nominated by petition last Wednesday, shortly before the filing window closed. The petition was turned in by Mary Wintzer.

Thomas said at the time he filled out his application there were two candidates running for two spots. At that point, he said, "I thought ‘Where’s the fun in that? Where’ the debate? When do we press each other on issues? And how do we make it a serious campaign?’"

When he found out the race would be between five individuals other than him, he withdrew.

"Now I’m convinced that there will be lively debate regarding all of the issues and they can push forward with that process," Thomas said.

There are now five candidates competing for the two open City Council seats. They are Mark Blue, Alex Butwinski, Martin D. Fox, Cindy Matsumoto and John Stafsholt.
