Deer Valley slated to open Saturday, Dec. 3

Deer Valley Resort is scheduled to commence its 2011-2012 winter season Saturday, Dec. 3, with 10 lifts scheduled to be running, serving 16 groomed runs.

According to Emily Summers, communications manager for Deer Valley, the 10 lifts will help skiers access Little Baldy Peak, Bald Mountain and Deer Crest terrain. The breakdown of lift-ticket prices was still in the works as of Tuesday afternoon, but Summers did confirm a single-day adult lift-ticket would be $75 until more terrain opens.

She also said the resort will have its three new conveyor lifts across the beginner area known as Wide West running for young and beginner skiers.

Deer Valley Resort president and general manager Bob Wheaton said the conveyor lifts are just a few of the new features at the resort this season.

"We’ve completely reconfigured our whole lower base area here," he said. "We shortened the Snowflake Lift, which was one of two beginner lifts out of the base lodge and we moved a loading station up the hill. It really opens up a lot of terrain and gives us a lot of flexibility. We’ll be able to do an even better job than we have in the past."

Wheaton said the resort is scheduled to open up such a large amount of terrain due to the resort’s investment in snow-making machines.

"To say that we’re happy about it would be an understatement," he said. "I would say we’re ecstatic about it. That’s how we’re going to be able open with 16 runs, so thank God we did that."

Deer Valley’s Opening Day on Saturday is scheduled to be celebrated along with the 20th anniversary of the Deer Valley Celebrity SkiFest, on Saturday and Sunday. The SkiFest will feature a giant slalom race on Saturday and a Pro-Am race on Sunday.

According to a release, "The invitational ski event pairs former Olympic ski legends with television and film celebrities for a weekend of skiing, live music and fundraising for the environmental group Waterkeeper Alliance, which supports and empowers Waterkeeper member organizations to protect communities, ecosystems and water quality."

According to the same release, celebrities included will be: Steve Mahre, Phil Mahre, Tommy Moe and Deer Valley’s own Ambassador of Skiing Heidi Voelker, along with Hollywood stars Larry David, Cheryl Hines, Scott Wolf, Patrick Warburton, Oliver Hudson, Bianca Kajlich, Dylan Bruno, Trevor Donovan, Kris Polaha, Hill Harper, JB Smoove, Mark Feuerstein and Joey Pantoliano.

The 2012 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup also returns to Deer Valley Feb. 1-4.

"We’re looking forward to a great ski season," Wheaton said. "We’ve done a lot of work on the mountain."
