Legislative update

House Bill 194, which won approval in the House Education Committee on Monday in an 8-5 vote, would give schools about $26 million to help reduce class sizes. Schools would be required to return the money if they didn’t meet targets. House Bill 69, the Repeal of Board Leeway for Reading Improvement, has passed in the House and the Senate standing committees. This bill repeals the local school board leeway to fund part of a school district’s K-3 Reading Improvement Program, and instead provides state funding for that program.
