Park City School District property tax public hearing delayed

A public Truth in Taxation Hearing regarding the Park City School District’s proposal to increase property taxes has been delayed.
District business administrator Todd Hauber said that an error had been made in the certified tax rate, leading to the district publicizing incorrect numbers regarding the amount of money the proposed tax increase would cost property owners.
A public hearing regarding the tax proposal was to be held August 19. A new hearing date was yet to be determined as of Monday evening, pending the county auditor sending the school district the correct amounts, said Hauber, who was unsure how significant the change in valuation will be.
Hauber said that by law, the school district must post a public notice about the hearing at least 10 days prior to it taking place. It must also advertise the hearing in the newspaper at least 14 days prior. Since the district will have to post a corrected notice and run a corrected advertisement, the timeline for the hearing will be pushed back "significantly."
The delay puts the school district in a time crunch, Hauber said. The school board must adopt tax rates before the county treasurer can send residents tax bills, which are due November 30.
"With the board not adopting tax rates, the county treasurer doesn’t even know what to put on the bill," Hauber said.
According to information on the school district’s website, pcschools.us, the property tax increase is being proposed to combat a swift rise in student enrollment numbers. Officials say the increase in students will put the district in the red within two years if a tax increase is not approved.
