Jana L (Hebert) Powell

PR

1960-2009

Jana was born on July 10, 1960, in Anchorage, Alaska, to John and Leola Hebert. She parted this life on November 21, 2009, after a seven-year battle with breast cancer, surrounded by her family and friends. The last 18 months she never gave up even though the cancer had moved into her bones, liver, brain and eye. She fought the good fight every moment, every day; she made it worth the price she paid.

She spent her childhood as an Army brat living in Alaska, Japan, and Alabama before her family settled down in Dugway, Utah. Jana graduated from Dugway High in 1978 and attended the University of Utah. It was there that she met her mate of 31 years, Steven Powell. Jana and Steve were married on August 28, 1982, and remained together until her death. They made their home in Summit Park, Utah, a place she said she never wanted to leave.

Jana was the proud mother of Bryce and Kevin Powell. Her proudest moment was seeing both boys reach the rank of Eagle Scout. Jana received her BS degree in nursing from the University of Utah in 1986 and, shortly after, went to work at the Salt Lake City/County Health Department. Hopefully no one reading this has required the services of using her clinic (inside joke).

Jana was involved in the Boy Scouts from the time Bryce started in Cub Scouts in 1998. Jana stayed involved in the Scouts through two battles with cancer. It is estimated she helped more than 60 boys in Park City Troop 72 reach the rank of Eagle. In September 2009 she was honored with the 10 most influential women in Scouting for the Great Salt Lake Council. She is also scheduled to receive Scouting’s Silver Beaver award. She was a Scouter until the end.

Jana loved adventure, from being forced to be a training dummy for skydiving tandem jumpmasters to traveling Europe on her own.
