Miners earn another dramatic win

It was another game and another dramatic win for the Park City Miners boys’ basketball team on Tuesday night at home against Juan Diego.

Last Friday, sophomore guard Bosten VanDerVeur hit a last-second, half-court three to give the Miners a 47-46 victory over Wasatch.

Tuesday, it was senior forward Ryan Sherman’s turn.

With 20 seconds left in the game, and his team trailing 38-37, Sherman received a pass in the lane. Without hesitation, he took the ball to the rim, finishing a tough layup despite intense defensive pressure from the Soaring Eagle.

Juan Diego’s final desperation shot bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded, giving the Miners a 39-38 victory.

Sherman said he was frustrated with the way he had played up until the final possession and decided it was time to make his move.

"I just wanted to get the ball with my back to the basket," he said. "I finally got it on the last possession and I just went into contact, towards the basket, and got the bucket."

Park City coach Caleb Fine said Sherman hadn’t been going to the basket strongly enough on Tuesday night, but added that the final possession was what the Miners have come to expect from their senior leader.

"I was proud of Ryan," he said. "I don’t think he played his best game, but we’re very proud that our senior captain went into contact, didn’t care that the guy was taller, and made the game-winning basket. Huge play."

Sherman finished the game with only seven points, five of which came in the first half.

Sophomore guard Bosten VanDerVeur and senior guard/forward Hayden Daily handled most of the scoring load for the Miners. VanDerVeur led the team with 16 points, including an eight-point third quarter. Daily did most of his damage in the first quarter, when he knocked down two three-pointers for six of his 10 points.

Though the Miners escaped with a win, Sherman and Fine were concerned with the team’s poor rebounding.

"I felt like we made more mistakes in this game that could have cost us," Fine said. "We got dominated on the boards because we weren’t boxing out."

"We made a lot of mistakes tonight," Sherman agreed. "But we found a way to win. At the end, you’ve just got to want it."

And, both Sherman and Fine agreed, being 2-0 in Region 10 play is what’s really important.

"Juan Diego was supposed to be second in the region," Sherman said. "We weren’t supposed to win a game in region, but now we’re 2-0."

"We were picked sixth (of six teams in Region 10) by the coaches," Fine said. "We could still end up sixth. It’s a great start, but if we stop here, we’re in big trouble."

The Miners, after improving to 2-0 in Region 10 play, are now 6-8 overall. Following the Juan Diego game, the schedule called for them to play three of their next four games on the road, starting with Friday’s trip to Union, which took place after this issue went to press.

The lone home game in that stretch will be Jan. 18 against Uintah.
