Nike executives will swoosh into Park City

by Jay Hamburger THE PARK RECORD

A large group of Nike executives is planning to swoosh into Park City in December for a summit, an event that is expected to give the local economy a boost as the community awaits more snow and the coming holidays.

A City Hall report issued this week indicated 200 top Nike executives are headed to Park City from Dec. 10 until Dec. 14, a Monday through Friday. The event is known as the Nike Marketing Summit, the report said. It said the Nike executives have corporate events scheduled and will be using an undisclosed number of businesses and other facilities.

A Nike spokesperson said event details were still being planned in the middle of the week. The spokesperson said no public events are scheduled while the group is in Park City. It is not known whether Nike athletes will attend alongside the executives.

The City Hall report said the Nike group plans to put up a tent measuring 50 feet by 90 feet in the Brew Pub lot on upper Main Street on Dec. 11 and Dec. 12. Building the tent and taking it down will occur the day before and the day after.

The report, written by Sustainability Department staffer Jason Glidden, said the event "exposes Park City to a demographic that celebrates outdoor recreation and are potential repeat customers."

Glidden also said in the report Main Street will play an important role, including meetings at the Egyptian Theatre and what he describes as a "dine-around" in restaurants on the street. He noted that lodging numbers are usually low during the week that the Nike group will be in Park City.

In an interview, Glidden said the event is "low impact but high return."

The Park City Chamber/Bureau was not involved in arranging the event. Bill Malone, the president and CEO of the Chamber/Bureau, though, noted the Nike group will arrive during the pre-holiday downtime. Skiers vacationing during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays typically head to Park City starting a few days before Christmas.

The event will be the latest in a series of high-profile gatherings in Park City this year. They included two major political events — a Mitt Romney summit hosted by the candidate in the summer and a Democratic conference for state-level party leaders being held this week.

"When it’s an athletic company, it’s something that’s even a greater fit," Malone said.

The Historic Park City Alliance, a group that represents the interests of businesses on or close to Main Street, said in a recent letter to Glidden the organization supports the tent in the Brew Pub lot "due to the number of people they will be bringing to Historic Park City, during a slow time during a December week." The letter was signed by Alison Butz, the executive director.
