Park City athlete sets U.S. record

Submitted by Les Wiehe and Dave Yocum

Competing against some of the best young shot putters in America and Scandinavia, Park City’s Justin Pickard set the new American indoor shot put record in the Youth Division of USA Track and Field at the 2nd Annual Viking Shot Put Challenge at BYU. Pickard broke the record on his fourth throw after three fouls. Then, on his sixth and final throw, he bested his own record, beating the old mark by almost four feet.

Pickard said that with over 30 supporters from Park City, along with supporters from the Provo area and multiple European coaches and competitors in attendance, it was the most pressure he had ever had in any meet.

Pickard’s next step to the national title will be the 18th State Western Regional Qualifier at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Feb. 17. The top six qualifiers from the four regions of the country will qualify for the USATF National Youth Indoor Track and Field Championship in Landover, Md., in early May.
