Park City Ski Team shines at Eric Hays Memorial
December 21, 2012
Dominic Demschar started the Eric Hays Memorial slalom race at Park City Mountain Resort wearing bib number two on Wednesday morning.
Thursday afternoon, he was standing atop the winner’s podium wearing bib number one after posting a total time of one minute, 23.18 seconds during Wednesday’s men’s slalom race.
The Park City Ski Team Under-21 competitor had the added bonus of getting to share the podium with two of his teammates U-18 skier Darwin Taylor (1:19.86) and fellow U-21 team member Kieran Adams (1:21.14), who finished in second and third place, respectively.
Demschar, who had just returned from racing in Canada three days before, said he was happy to pick up an early-season victory close to home.
"There’s nothing better than winning, no matter where you are," he said.
He added that winning is even better when his teammates do well, too.
"It’s awesome," he said. "Home events are always the best to make sure we get all three (podium spots)."
The Park City Ski Team had a tougher day Thursday, placing only one slalom racer, Sam DuPratt, on the podium. He finished the day with a two-run total time of 1:21.90, good for second place.
On the women’s side of the Eric Hays Memorial slalom event, Isabella Wright of the USSA Academy and PCST’s Jessica Kelley engaged in a tough two-day battle.
On Wednesday, Wright took first place with a time of 1:23.18, while Kelley finished third, crossing the finish line in 1:24.50.
On Thursday, Kelley and Wright switched places, with Kelley taking the top spot in 1:23.98. Wright finished third, posting a time of 1:24.15.
The Eric Hays Memorial featured four days of racing among skiers from the U-14 class all the way up to the senior level. Racers competed in both slalom and giant slalom events on the Payday run at the resort.
Kelley, who also coaches for the Park City Ski Team, said she enjoys competing in this event every year against the younger skiers.
"I jump in this race every year usually," she said. "It’s fun to get out there and race with the kids that I coach."
Overall, both Demschar and Kelley were pleased with the condition of the Payday slope at Park City Mountain Resort, saying the recent snowfall didn’t affect the race at all.
"The people here did a good job making sure the course raced well all day," Demschar said.
In addition to being well maintained, the hill’s low level of difficulty made for some aggressive racing decisions, Kelley said.
"It’s a pretty easy hill," she said. "So that part can be more challenging trying to attack the course even though it’s a little flatter."
This year marked the 31st annual Eric Hays Memorial, which is name after a former PCST racer who died in an automobile accident, and the event holds a special place in the hearts of the Park City skiers.
"It’s a great event every year," Kelley said. "It’s a great way to start off the season for most of the kids, it’s their first race of the season. It’s a great event for the whole team."
