Skiers do some trailblazing

Submitted by the Park City Ski Team, Special to The Park Record

The morning air was crisp and the fall foliage magnificent on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Park City Mountain Resort, when 60-plus Park City Ski Team athletes and coaches worked to improve Jenni’s Trail, the new hiking and biking trail named for Jenni Smith, president and general manager of PCMR.

The 4.7-mile trail, designed to be a moderate route from the base, passes through the mid-station of the Pay Day lift before reaching the top of Pay Day. From the Pay Day mid station, it is a little over two miles to the top of the Town Lift. The goal of Saturday’s operation was to make an already well-established route smoother, safer, and more resistant to erosion.

It is central to the mission of the Park City Ski Team for its athletes to contribute to the greater Park City community throughout the year. The athletes involved in the cleanup project ranged in age from 11 to 20. Their efforts included rock picking, raking, and shoveling water channels to control erosion. The spirited group covered the lower section of the trail in four hours, while a special operations team worked on the upper section.

Motivated by a goal "to be the best junior alpine racing program in the country," this Park City Ski Team group has enjoyed unprecedented athletic success in recent years, developing some of the finest athletes in the United States at collegiate, national and international levels. Currently, the team maintains a roster of more than 170 athletes.

"As a nonprofit organization, the Park City Ski Team appreciates the importance of giving back. Even if they were never asked, our athletes would be doing their part to maintain trails," said Jesse Hunt, executive director of the program. "Our teams are grateful to have a world-class mountain to train on, and truly excited for the season to get under way."

Park City Mountain Resort is scheduled to open Saturday, Nov. 17. For more information about the athletes and programs of the Park City Ski Team visit
