Recycle Utah celebrating Sustainability Month

Recycle Utah is expanding its focus on environmental stewardship by hosting numerous events and programs this April, a.k.a. Sustainability Month. Residents can take in their yard waste, learn how to compost and celebrate Earth Day with the local recycling non-profit this month and into May.

This Wednesday, April 16, will be Recycle Utah’s first Sustainability Month event a composting workshop, with another to follow on Saturday, April 19. Executive Director Insa Riepen said they decided to start the workshop because she noticed many individuals throw their green waste (i.e. fruits/vegetables) in the trash.

"I dared them to keep [their green waste]," Riepen said. "Because, as the saying goes, a rind is a terrible thing to waste."

During last summer’s Park City Leadership Class, members sold around 300 composters, Riepen said. Recycle Utah will also have composters for sale at its recycle center on Woodbine Way.

The last weekend in April will be Dumpster Days, where residents can bring both yard waste and garbage, to be sorted out into two separate dumpsters with the help of an attendant.

"In Park City, we used to have several main dumpsters sprinkled throughout town, left unattended and overnight," Riepen said. "They turned into pretty bad examples of how to get rid of garbage."

Some guidelines Riepen gave about proper yard waste and trash disposal included: limbs of trees are accepted, not whole trees; a water heater can be recycled in the mixed metal bin and a leftover refrigerator carton can be recycled with corrugated cardboard.

On Sunday, April 27, Recycle Utah’s one and only fundraiser takes place at Wasatch Brew Pub, where Earth Day will also be celebrated and a silent auction will take place for some very "unusual items," Riepen said. Dinner and refreshments will also be served.

Finally, on Saturday, May 3, Recycle Utah will be accepting hazardous waste and unused prescription drugs at Canyons Resort near the Cabriolet.

The dates/times of these events are:

  • April 16, 6 p.m. Free composting workshop, recycling center, 1951 Woodbine Way
  • April 19, 10 a.m. Free composting workshop, recycling center
  • April 25-26, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Dumpster Days, recycling center (held last weekend of every month); collection of green waste and garbage in two separate bins
  • April 27, 5-8 p.m. Earth Day and Silent Auction at Wasatch Brew Pub, adults $35, kids $15
  • May 3, 9 a.m.-noon Hazardous materials and prescription drug collection, Canyons Resort

Riepen added that Sustainability Month is a great time to make a positive environmental impact.

"It is time to remember that we live on this one planet together," Riepen said. "There are lots of opportunities to act locally, and that’s where we come in."
