Zero turnovers: something the South Summit varsity football team has been unable to accomplish all season until now.

In the quarterfinals of the state playoffs on Oct. 31 in Kamas, the Wildcats finally made it through a game without a turnover as they defeated Millard High School 45-6.

South Summit’s running back Trevor Rydalch opened the game by taking the kickoff for a 92-yard touchdown run. The Millard Eagles couldn’t get past the Wildcats’ defense and ended up punting the ball back to South Summit without any significant gain. The Wildcats took over near midfield where quarterback Trevor Lewis led the offense down the field for another touchdown.

The Eagles got the ball back at the beginning of the second quarter but again were unable to gain any significant yards and gave the ball back on downs. Lewis made the score 21-0 on a 60-yard run touchdown. Millard fumbled the ball, Trevor Rydalch scored his second touchdown on a 13-yard run. The score was 28-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Wildcats kicked off to the Eagles who fumbled the ball on the second play. Wildcats’ linebacker Niko Klus was able to recover the ball and run it in for another touchdown. The Wildcats’ defense forced the Eagles to punt, and running back Denver Hansen drove the ball down the field for another Wildcats’ touchdown.

The Eagles finally scored after a fake punt in the third quarter. The Wildcats final scoring came in the fourth quarter when Trevor Rydalch kicked a 23-yard field goal.

The Wildcats’ defense allowed the Eagles only 127 yards of total offense thanks to the defensive front of Danny Jackson, Harrison Littledike, Cody Angell and Judd Rydalch. Linebackers Karson Crittenden, Jacob Flinders, Hansen, Levi Thompson and Klus kept the Eagles’ running backs gaining any yards. Defensive backs Trevor Rydalch, Tanner Powers and Parker Anderson blanketed their receivers, allowing the Eagles only three receptions in the entire game.

"It was a total team effort," coach Jerry Parker said. "I was just glad to see them execute so well."

In another quarterfinal game, Region 2A West champion, Enterprise, was defeated by the Region 2A East fourth-place team, Grand, 28-14, leaving Grand to play the Wildcats at Southern Utah University in Cedar City on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. in the semifinals.
