Contractor Jon Haag, left, rifles through antique newspapers he found in a crawl space under a building at 9 Hillside Ave., in Old Town, where crews are restoring a historic house and a small barn.

He says the newspapers date to the 1890s and the crew, which also includes Roberto Zamora, right, found Confederate-era currency, an old whiskey bottle, someone’s high-school diploma, photos and letters.

Kirsten Whetstone, a City Hall planner, says the original part of the house was built at the turn of the last century.

Construction crews in Old Town frequently discover artifacts as they dig and a layer of dirt underneath the ground in the neighborhood is well known for revealing remnants of a devastating 1898 fire.
