Summer has begun and kids are out of school, throwing their books aside and not giving them another glance until the fall. Although taking a break is essential, neglecting all schoolwork can hurt many of them upon their return to class. Thankfully, Kumon of Park City is offering free summer classes to students who are willing to put in the time and effort this summer to ensure this doesn’t happen to them.

Randy Carr, co-owner of Kumon of Park City says, "Many kids fall behind during the summer but it is our goal to keep them up to speed with what they’ve learned and help them maintain or even advance their skill set for the fall." Through a community collaboration, Kumon’s internationally acclaimed math and reading classes will be offered free; an enormous benefit for families who may not be able to afford the monthly fees to take these classes. Mike Kaeske, a retired social worker and community volunteer, raised the funds needed in order to bring this opportunity to children who may not normally have access to Kumon. The summer program offers students from the ages of 5 through 10, one-hour lessons twice a week in math and reading with additional assignments to be completed at home. It is a comprehensive program created to instill a love of learning in children and to help them gain the skills and confidence needed to excel in school. These free classes will be held at the Branch Church in Prospector thanks to its Pastor, Lenny Perata, who has donated the classroom space. This location will provide easy access by public transportation for students living throughout the area.

Classes will run June 17 through August 19 on Monday and Thursdays from 6-7 pm at 1401 Kearns Blvd. To enroll please call 435-503-1905. For those families wishing to speak to someone in Spanish, contact Mariselle at 435-513-2661 or Pamella at 435-575-1203. Anyone in the community who can benefit from this program is encouraged to enroll.

Park City School District is being investigated by the federal Office of Civil Rights for persistent and ongoing violations. It’s a very big deal that has a lot of our community on edge.
