The developer redoing the building once known as the Main Street Mall plans to haul contaminated soils from the site starting by the middle of May or sooner, according to the Park City Building Department.

Chad Root, the chief building official at City Hall, said the hauling operation will last one week at the same time a major excavation is underway at the site, 333 Main St. The excavators will work from the Park Avenue side of the construction site. The wider construction is underway on the Main Street and Park Avenue sides of the building.

Dump trucks outfitted with secondary trailers known as pups will haul the contaminated soils. They will be taken to a facility designed to hold the soils, either at Richardson Flat or in the Salt Lake Valley.

Officials and the developers anticipated there would be contaminated soils at the site, a legacy of Park City's silver mining history.

The dump trucks will use northbound upper Park Avenue, a historic residential street, as they leave the site. Root estimated it will require approximately 60 trips by dump trucks to haul the soils.

The crews, meanwhile, are scheduled to install an air and heating system on the roof of the structure on May 19, a Monday. Root said a crane is needed for the installation. The crane will be brought to the site at 5 a.m. and be removed by noon on the same day. Root said traffic on Main Street outside the location will be reduced to one lane. Flaggers will direct traffic.

The redo of the building is the largest construction site on Main Street. It has been one of the projects criticized as people became weary with the amount of work along the street.

City Hall staffers this week submitted a memo to Mayor Jack Thomas and the Park City Council providing the elected officials with updates about the projects along Main Street and elsewhere.

The memo says there are concerns about the "lack of progress" at 692 Main St. and at the Silver Queen Hotel building. Another project, at 562 Main St., is "proceeding at a good pace," the memo says.

It also outlines Main Street streetscape improvements undertaken by City Hall, providing a rundown of the schedule through the end of May. The next timeframe, May 19 through May 30, includes work on natural gas lines and work on the east side of the Main Street-7th Street intersection.

The construction season along Main Street was expected to be busy this year with a series of private sector projects underway alongside City Hall's streetscape improvements.

The Park City economy has enjoyed a strong rebound from the depths of the recession, encouraging Main Street property owners to invest heavily in the renovations. Some of the projects, such as the one at the former Main Street Mall site, involve a nearly total redo.

The work, though, spurred concerns about the impact along Main Street as business owners told City Hall the construction sites hurt sales. The construction crews put up decorations and took other steps to create a more visually pleasing setting.
