Park City plans to repave a set of streets and put down a sealant on other roads this year as part of the Public Works Department's annual maintenance schedule.

The Park City Council recently approved three contracts worth a little more than $676,000 combined for the work. The most lucrative contract -- $540,924.28 -- went to Kilgore Contracting for milling and then putting down pavement overlays. Intermountain Slurry Seal won a $56,192.57 deal to put down slurry seals. Ridge Rock, Inc. was awarded a $79,035 contract to seal cracks.

Milling and overlaying involves taking off the road surface and replacing it with between 1 1/2 inches and two inches of new asphalt. A slurry seal extends the life of a road surface by putting down a thin layer of sealant.

The Public Works Department said the milling and overlays are planned in July and August, starting after Independence Day. The slurry seals are planned during the same period of time while the crack sealing is set to start in late August and extend into September.

According to a report submitted to Mayor Jack Thomas and the City Council in anticipation of the recent approvals, the work involves 5,132 tons of asphalt overlays. The slurry seal total is 44,421 square yards. It says the price of asphalt is up 8 percent from 2013.

"With volatile oil prices directly influencing the cost of pavement treatments it's very difficult to predict what future costs might look like," the report, written by Public Works Department staffers, said.

The milling and pavement overlays are scheduled on stretches of street including:

  • Short Line Drive between Iron Horse Drive and Deer Valley Drive

  • Deer Valley Loop Road between Deer Valley Drive and Rossie Hill Drive

  • Paddington Drive between Wyatt Earp Way and High Street

  • Thaynes Canyon Drive between S.R. 224 and Three Kings Drive

  • Three Kings Drive between Kings Court and Thaynes Canyon Drive

  • Park Avenue between 505 Park Ave. and Heber Avenue

  • American Saddler Drive between the western intersection of Meadows Drive and Arabian Drive

  • a 2,300-foot stretch of Royal Street at Guardsman Connection

  • Annie Oakley Drive

    Some of the streets where slurry seal will be put down include sections of Meadows Drive, Ashley Court, Crestline Drive, Butch Cassidy Court and Euston Drive.

    The work, meanwhile, is scheduled to include a coat of sealant on five sections of paved trails or paths, including along the south side of S.R. 248, off S.R. 224 and at the Quinn's Junction sports complex.
