The Sandstone Cove water tank is located off Mountain Top Lane. Kyle MacArthur, the water distribution manager for Park City, said the lightning affected the calibration of a water-level sensor. The tank's pumps read the sensor as indicating the water was at a lower level than it actually was and continued to operate, MacArthur said, adding that an alarm was not triggered as a result of the lightning.
The water filled the tank to an overflow pipe. Approximately 18,000 gallons of water escaped through the overflow pipe, MacArthur said. The water went into a gutter and down a storm drain. MacArthur called the incident "kind of a freak event."
The Park City Police Department said in an online statement the incident involved "a large amount of water and mud washing out onto the road."
