"We have members who have been with us when we started 15 to 16 years ago," Peacock said during an interview with The Park Record. "We frequently recruit people at our monthly coffee meetings who have lived in town for years, but have recently retired.
"These people know Park City like the back of their hand, but they want to participate in new activities," she said. "So, you don't have to be a newcomer to join Newcomers."
Newcomers is a social club that offers an array of activities including bridge, dining, bicycling and dancing, Peacock said.
"Our activities range from mah jong and hiking, to gardening and book clubs to girls' nights out and luncheons," she said. "We have something for everyone."
The club is currently running a membership drive that will culminate with a luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Silver Lake Lodge at Deer Valley. The doors will open at 11 a.m. and the event will run until 2 p.m. RSVPs can be made by emailing email@example.com or by calling 925-998-2843. Deadline is Sept. 4.
"This is our signature event," Peacock said. "We highlight this event because we want new people in the community or people who have been here for a long time to know what we're all about.
The event will begin with an hour of mingling and greeting old and new friends, she said.
"The highlight of the luncheon will be a separate room where we will have all of our activity chairs who will tell everyone about the events they are spearheading," Peacock said. "They will have their own separate tables with displays telling what activity they are in charge of."
Club members can sign up and get on an email list. Nonmembers can also sign up for a membership at the luncheon.
"The cost is $35 for single membership that can include up to two people," Peacock said. "It's a heck of a deal and it's an annual membership."
At noon, everyone will enjoy lunch prepared by Silver Lake Lodge chefs.
"There is a choice of two dishes — one is a grilled salmon filet with honey-soy glaze and ginger butter sauce and there is also a vegetarian option, which is a baked artichoke tart," Peacock said.
The meal will also include a salad, dessert, coffee and tea.
"We will also have a cash bar that will offer a variety of wine and beer and a specialty cocktail," Peacock said.
After the meal, the luncheon will feature a guest speaker. This year it will be former Park City Mayor Dana Williams.
"He's such a local character," Peacock said. "For new and established residents, he is such an interesting figure, so we thought he would be perfect for the luncheon."
When the Newcomers Club selects its luncheon speakers, it looks at local and regional residents, Peacock said.
"We want to feature people who have somewhat common interests with our club members," she said.
Last year, the luncheon featured Nadine Wimmer, the news anchor for KSL TV and the year prior, it invited University of Utah president David W. Pershing.
The way Williams got recruited was a "cute" story, Peacock said.
"A year and a half ago, when he was still mayor, he spoke at one of our monthly coffee meetings," she said. "Last summer, I saw him at an event and he said, 'When are you going to have me back at Newcomers, because once I'm not mayor anymore, I can talk about everything that has happened behind the scenes.'
"When we asked, he said yes without hesitation," Peacock said. "We hope we can get him to bring his guitar, but we'll see."
After Williams' remarks, there will be a question-and-answer session.
"We plan to wrap up around 2 p.m.," Peacock said.
The Newcomers Club of Greater Park City has held this annual luncheon at Deer Valley since 2011.
"The luncheon averages about 110 diners every year and we're hoping for a little more this year," Peacock said. "When you average that many people, there aren't a lot of venues in town that can accommodate that size.
"So, Deer Valley works with us and we just keep going back because they keep doing a great job for us," she said. "This year, we're hoping for more men to join us."
The Newcomers Club of Greater Park City will host its annual membership luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Silver Lake Lodge at Deer Valley.
