Someone stole a handgun recently from a vehicle parked in a garage at a Park City hotel, the Park City Police Department said.
The vehicle was in a garage on Shadow Ridge Road. It had been parked overnight. Phil Kirk, a police captain, said either a door was unlocked or a window was left open. The perpetrator did not force their way into the vehicle, he said.
The gun was hidden under a seat. Kirk said he was not sure if the .44-caliber revolver was loaded. The gun is apparently part of Ruger's New Model Blackhawk line of firearms. The victim is a visitor from New Mexico, Kirk said.
The Police Department does not have a suspect and there are no leads in the case. Nothing else was taken from inside the vehicle.
Kirk said the case "very much concerns us."
The captain said the Police Department has increased patrols in the area where the gun was reported stolen, indicating there have been other vehicle burglaries. He also said two vehicles have been stolen in the vicinity during the summer. Both of the vehicles were recovered shortly afterward.
Law enforcement agencies typically worry that a stolen gun could be used while committing a crime or could be sold on the black market.
People with information about the stolen gun may contact the Police Department at 615-5500 or the department's tip line, 615-5847. The department also operates an online tip form, www.tipsubmit.com/WebTips.aspx?AgencyID=994.
