The screening will be Friday, Aug. 16, at the Resort Village, at dusk.
"This is our second summer of screening Sundance Film Festival films in our Resort Village, and while the formal official Sundance Institute summer series doesn't start here until Aug. 23, we reached out to them to see if we could show additional films from their slate," said Steve Pastorino, public relations director for Canyons. "We were specifically looking for films that we felt were of particular interests thematically for our guests."
One of the films was "Chasing Ice," which documented acclaimed environmental photographer James Balog as he worked in the Arctic on an assignment for National Geographic.
Balog was supposed to capture images to help tell the story of the Earth's changing climate, and used time-lapse photography to show how fast the glaciers disappeared.
"The film made a great splash at Sundance Film Festival and has a pretty powerful message about climate change," Pastorino said.
In addition to the screening, Canyons' sustainability task force, which has since been renamed the Echo Team, which is the Vail Resort's umbrella organization for both corporate-driven and employee-led environmental action, will do a presentation.
"They will demonstrate some of the things Canyons employees feel passionately about and actively do in our community about our environment," Pastorino said.
The event is also a 'no-waste' event.
"That means we will be offering preferred parking to carpools and will offer a bike valet who will look after the bicycles," Pastorino said. "Also the food and beverage outlets will serve their items in recyclable containers.
"We encourage people to arrive early to set up their blanket," he said. "They can bring their own food and drinks, but we'll also have three of our restaurants offering their menus as well."
The plan for the evening is to have Olympian Kaylin Richardson, who writes a blog for Canyons, introduce the film.
"Kaylin was invited to Al Gore's Leadership Summit about the Climate Reality Project in Chicago last week, and over the course of her career has become a pro-snow athlete and is part of the Warren Miller climate ambassador team called I Am Pro Snow," Pastorino said. "She feels strongly about the effects of climate change and the opportunities we have right now to do something about it."
Canyons Resort will host a free screening of Jeff Orlowski's 2012 documentary "Chasing Ice" at the Resort Village on Friday, Aug. 16, at dusk. For more information, visit www.canyons.com.
