Artique art gallery in Kamas is having its monthly First Friday artist opening this Friday, Nov. 1, from 6-9 p.m. This First Friday is a little different than usual the featured artist will be Artique's owner, Katie Stellpflug.
"This will be my third show," Stellpflug said in an interview with The Park Record, "and first since last fall."
Stellpflug works in ceramics and has been building and throwing a lot of new works in anticipation of the First Friday.
"My form is pretty raw and my style I guess is raw," Stellpflug said. "I like the texture in the clay to really show through, and its character. I try not to cover it too much with the glaze and I'll leave the throw marks in there and give a little bit different feel to them."
Stellpflug adds textures to the clay pieces using canvas, rope, her fingers, or anything else that catches her eye. "I've been working in my studio quite a bit to get some new stuff," she said.
Stellpflug has been focused on ceramics since grade school.
"I started probably in middle school, maybe 8th grade or so, got into it in high school and then from then on, you know, in college," she said. "So 20 years now. It's hard to believe but it's been over 20 years."
Stellpflug's most popular pieces are her raw-looking cups with three indented fingerprints.
"I just started making these smaller cups," Stellpflug said, that morphed into larger cups and "more vase-like" pieces, including planters. "These have kind of become my signature piece, with my little fingerprints in there."
First Fridays are fun, Stellpflug said, because they generally draw crowds upwards of 50 or 60 people to the cozy gallery. And, she added, "every first Friday we bring a different crowd. It changes with each artist."
Artique, 283 N. Main in Kamas, is open Thursdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. For more information, call Katie Stellpflug at (435) 640-8048 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
