New Year's is a time for reflection and resolutions, but New Year's Eve is a time for celebration.

In keeping with that tradition, Canyons will be abuzz with a load of family-friendly events for guests and local residents on Tuesday, said Steve Pastorino, senior manager of communications at Canyons Resort.

"We have so many destination guests and local residents who are choosing Canyons for this important celebration during the ski season," Pastorino told The Park Record. "So obviously we want to provide a festive atmosphere and offer activities that can be turned into a safe way for everyone to celebrate."

Those activities include meeting Canyons' mascot Murdock the Moose in the Resort Village from 3 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., a live DJ at the Red Tail Grill Deck from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m., a family dinner at the Cabin Restaurant at 5 p.m., a gala dinner at the Grand Summit Hotel at 7:30 p.m., and, of course, the fireworks that will start about 7:30 p.m.

"We'll also have a Jibbin' for Juniors jam session and horse-drawn sleigh rides at the Ski Beach as well," Pastorino said. "These things just make this resort a great place to spend the holidays."

A new offering this year is for those who decide to spend the night.

"We will give them the option to add a New Year's brunch for a modest price," Pastorino said. "That way they can party it up the night before on New Year's Eve and then enjoy good meal the next day with out having to worry about cooking in the morning.

One of the traditional Canyons New Year's Eve highlights is the gala dinner at the Grand Summit Ballroom.

"Our Thanksgiving dinner sold out this year, which shows how much our guests love it here," Pastorino said. "So we are anticipating the same thing with the New Year's dinner."

The gala will feature a dinner buffet, special "cirque du New Year's" performers, dancing, a DJ and party favors.

Another big draw is the fireworks display that will begin around 7:30 p.m. over Orange Bubble Express.

Throughout the day on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, Canyons’ mascot Murdock the Moose will be at the Resort Village to meet visitors and guests.

"We do it early in the evening to give guests a chance to enjoy them and continue on with their celebrations," Pastorino said. "It's also good for families who have younger children who may or may not be able to stay awake until midnight.

"There are a lot of fireworks and the show has never disappointed our guests," he said. "It is spectacular."

Speaking of families, Canyons also offers a family dinner.

"They can come enjoy some great food and then head out to the ski beach to watch the fireworks," Pastorino said. "It's fun to see people who come from the surrounding community line up to watch them as well."

All the activities, except for the dinners, are free and open to the public.

Reservations are required for the dinners, and can be made by calling 435-615-3449 or 888-226-9667 .

"The week from Christmas to New Year's is one of the busiest times of our season," Pastorino said. "I would encourage anyone who wants to come to the New Year's Eve celebration to plan ahead and come early and even make an evening out of it to make sure you're on the premises in good time.

"We will be running our cabriolet shuttle and lift in the evening, so there will be plenty of parking located at the base of the resort," he said.
