So far, things have been going as planned.
"I'm finding more and more people are getting educated in wine, which is neat, because the history of wine is the history of the world," Wood told The Park Record. "There are so many wines out there to enjoy and we want to facilitate that here."
To further the area's education, the Park City Wine Club will begin winter wine series sessions at Jeremy Ranch Golf and Country Club every month from January until April.
The sessions will include a discussion about the wines and how to pair them with different foods.
"Our first event will kick off Jan. 3," Wood said. "The next one will be held on Valentines Day, Feb. 14, and then we'll continue in March and end in April."
Each session will feature a theme.
"January's theme will be wines of France, where we will feature five wines from the country's different regions," Wood explained. "In February, we'll feature the pinot noir, which is considered to be a silky, smooth wine, so we thought that would fit well with Valentine's Day. And the tasting will be followed by a romantic dinner if participants feel inclined."
South American wines will be the topic for March.
"People now are getting familiar with the malbec and carmenere wines from Chile and Argentina," Wood said.
April's wines will be ones that go well with outdoor cooking.
"Since we're coming into spring and barbecue season in April, we will probably go into some zinfandel," Wood said.
All the wines that will be showcased during these sessions are available in Utah.
"The state law says we can't import any wines from outside the borders," Wood said. "Which is okay because we want people to see what is available here."
Furthermore, all the wines are of high quality, and not too expensive.
"We try not to feature a wine that costs more than $30, so everyone can go out after the sessions to pick up a bottle," Wood said. "Also, after the tastings we will put the wines up on our website as reminders so people won't forget what the wines were and what they paired with."
Wood is working with the chef at Jeremy Ranch to create a pairing menu.
"I tell him what wines we will be spotlighting and he will make small plates of food that will go with the wines," she said. "It won't be like a sit-down dinner, but we will have an array of menu selections available."
Wood was introduced to Jeremy Ranch by one of her associates.
"He is a golf marshal at Jeremy Ranch, and, knowing my life of wine, talked with me and said it would be great if the Park City Wine Club did something at the golf club," she said. "That was the initial contact."
A few weeks ago, the Park City Wine Club hosted its Park City Sparkling event that featured wine and champagne tasting at Jeremy Ranch.
"We had a packed house and featured food pairings from all over the world," Wood said. "We sampled cava, a sparkling wine from Spain, prosecco from Italy, California sparkling, and, of course, champagne from France."
During the tasting, Wood talked about doing more with Jeremy Ranch.
"Since we require memberships for the Wine Club and the golf club also requires memberships, we thought it would be great to offer something together for the public," she said. "That just evolved into this winter wine series."
The series is open to Park City Wine Club and Jeremy Ranch Golf and Country Club members.
"Jeremy Ranch is a wonderful place and great venue for this series," Wood said. "It's easy to get to from Salt Lake City, and great for Park City residents."
The winter wine series is just one of the many activities Wood has planned for the Park City Wine Club in 2014.
"We are planning more wine-education trips throughout the summer to wine-making locations throughout Oregon, Washington, California and even Colorado," she said. "I would like to work with more restaurants to help servers educate their guests about which wine goes with what foods."
Wood also wants to do more outreach programs for the community.
"A couple of weeks ago, we did a Quarters for Christmas event and have done several other fundraisers," she said. "We feel it's important to give something back."
Wood said the winter wine series couldn't have happened without her sponsors — Edge Steakhouse, Rich Haines Gallery, Sally Roberts' team at Re/Max Realty, Martin Worley Financial Advisors and the Kiler Grove Winery.
"I can't believe the club started off almost two years ago as a small vision of getting people together to share wine and learn about wine," she said. "It's been a journey."
Recently, Wood traveled to France, and finished the French Wine Scholar program.
Passing the program will mean Wood has a working knowledge of wines, wine culture and vintner culture from every region of France from ancient history into the modern day.
"I took the test and we won't know the results until after the New Year," she said. "There are only two French Wine Scholars in Utah right now. So let's keep our fingers crossed."
