Christian Center to host seminar

Sport psychology is a hot topic these days, especially when it’s applied to youth sports. For example, how much should parents push their children? How much pressure should a child be under to succeed? And what are some of the best methods to ensure a balance of fun and healthy competition?

Sport psychologist Cornelia Holden will visit the Christian Center of Park City on Wednesday, Dec. 3, to host a seminar titled "Awakening Under Pressure," discussing the value of competition.

The seminar was brought to Park City through a partnership with Harvard.

"Jim and Susan Swartz, our founders and board co-chairs, they initiated this relationship with Harvard with the idea of bringing some of the top speakers in the country and world that come through Harvard and bring them to Park City for our community," Executive Director Rob Harter said. "Holden is a Harvard grad and we chose her specifically because of Park City’s interest and love for athletics and healthy competition."

The Christian Center is also partnering with the Youth Sports Alliance and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to host the event, which will take place at the Prospector Theater from 6-8 p.m.

Holden, the founder and principal of Mindful Warrior, trains athletes, coaches, educators and emerging leaders, among others. Harter said what Holden will be speaking about on Wednesday is particularly important in a community like Park City.

"She seeks to remind all athletes of the importance of healthy competition, with the emphasis on healthy," he said. "Because of our city’s focus on achievement and competition (Olympic athletes, outdoor recreation culture, etc.), this will be an important topic."

The seminar is free to the public, but Harter said a $15 donation is recommended. Seating is also limited, he said.

"We don’t want anyone not to come because of cost," he said. "But if you can afford it, $15 for donation. We encourage people to register because seating is limited and we have had a great response already."
