Things were looking really good for the Park City High School boys' tennis team on Tuesday afternoon at the PC MARC against Wasatch.

Through the first two completed matches, No. 1 singles player TJ Mayo and No. 2 singles player Rawson Simmons had both dominated their opponents, each winning by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

Beyond those top players, however, the Miners struggled and would ultimately drop the match to Wasatch after No. 3 singles player David Payne, the No. 1 doubles team of Brennan French and Will Roberson and the No. 2 doubles team of Kade Townsend and Henry Stoddard all lost their matches.

Despite the loss, Mayo is confident the team will learn and continue to improve. The senior, who is playing his first season of tennis after playing on the baseball team for three years, added that playing at the MARC is a great experience.

"Everyone on our team is a great teammate," he said. "They all come out and support us you can see them all around the track watching. It's fun to be here and have some of your friends from school come and watch, too."

Mayo said he was happy with the way he battled against Wasatch's top singles player.

"I like that I never gave up in any game whatsoever," he said. "Even if he took the lead early, I'd fight my way back to deuce and then take the game. It's a big benefit for me to stay in the game and keep hitting my shots."

However, Mayo acknowledges the need to improve as the season wears on.

"I'm focusing on consistency in my serves," he said. "I'm trying to aim my serves to bring them off the court. I also want to end the point quickly so I don't get too tired out there."

The Miners will be back in action April 3 at Uintah. They'll play again at the PC MARC on April 10 against Juan Diego. That match is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
