Canyons Resort will open for the summer season on June 12, but the real party starts Friday, June 13.

In addition to opening the Red Pine Gondola, Short Cut and High Meadow chair lifts for mountain biking and access to the resort's alpine lake, several festivities are planned.

"For the first time ever, we're doing a big kickoff weekend," senior manager of communications Margo Christiansen said. "On the 13th and 14th, we're having a band come in and a DJ out on the Umbrella Bar deck. BMX rider Terry Adams is coming to do a demo and we're going to be giving away two bike park season passes.

"We're definitely trying to get people out and create some excitement leading into the season."

The big news this summer is that Canyons will be staying open later.

"We will be running lifts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., so we've extended our lifts by about an hour," said Steve Luker, the director of resort activities. "On Wednesday nights, we keep them open until 8 p.m. starting June 25.

"We're trying to give people who work 9-5 a chance to come out one day after work."

The concert series will return to Canyons this summer, but with an added bonus, according to communications specialist Caitlin Martz.

"We're starting two weeks early, so we'll have more shows other than just the standard mid-July through August," she said. "We have every single concert this summer confirmed except for one, in August."

The July 3 celebration will return this summer as well, Martz added.

"It's the same band we had last year Soulistics which is my personal favorite," she said. "We're going to have a fireworks show again and the usual food and beverage outlets will be here as well."

Daily activities include mountain biking, hiking, pedal boating, fishing, a miniature golf course, Zipline rides and more.

Luker said this year should be a good year for fishing at the alpine lake.

"We've got it stocked with 500 tiger trout," he said. "Those trout are getting big. I was just up there and every fish I saw was 16-20 inches. When we stocked it several years ago, they were between 10-15 inches.

"People can bring their own equipment up there and fish. It's all catch-and-release there's no fishing license required."

For those who have already purchased their 2014-15 Epic Pass, the summer season is included. Canyons is also selling family passes this year, with discounted rates on several activities.
